What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures avoid slippage because they’re secured onto an average of four to eight dental implants. These titanium posts replicate the root structure of your missing teeth, something that regular dentures cannot do. As a result, implant dentures provide greater stability and function.

Based on your specific needs and preferences, Dr. Gregory Palmer may suggest either one of the two types of implant dentures.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Just like natural teeth, fixed implant dentures remain in your mouth at all times. Only an implant dentist in Houston can remove them. This means that you can brush and floss your new teeth just as you would your natural ones.

Removable Implant Dentures

If you’d rather be able to take out your denture to clean it, we can design your implant denture to be removable. That way, you won’t need to change your oral hygiene regimen too much.

The Implant Denture Process

To receive an implant denture, you must have adequate bone tissue in your jaw to support the implants. During your consultation, Dr. Palmer will take X-rays and determine whether you need bone grafting before implants can be placed. Once he gives you the green light, you’ll undergo dental implant surgery. Small incisions are made in your gums, and the implant posts are positioned within your jawbone to take advantage of the available bone density. Over the next several months, your jawbone fuses with the implants, creating a bond just as strong as that of your natural teeth. Lastly, you’ll return to our office to have your attachments placed, impressions taken, and your prosthetic placed.

Am I a Good Candidate for Implant Dentures?

As long as you’re in generally good health and you’re missing most or all of your teeth, then chances are you’re eligible for implant dentures. That being said, good candidates should also have a strong jawbone and healthy gum tissue. If we find that you have untreated gum disease or jawbone deterioration, we can often help you qualify for implant dentures with one or more preparatory procedures, such as periodontal therapy or bone grafting.

Benefits of Combining Dentures with Dental Implants

By anchoring a denture onto dental implants in Houston rather than having them sit on the gums, you can look forward to countless benefits over traditional dentures. These include:

  • A stronger biting force that lets you eat a variety of delicious and nutritious foods
  • Prosthetic teeth that will never shift around or fall out of your mouth
  • A denture that lasts for 30+ years on average
  • Long-term savings from avoiding the need for adhesives and frequent denture repairs and replacements
  • A younger facial appearance, as implants keep the jawbone strong enough to prevent wrinkles
