Root Canals

Endodontics
The American Dental Association recognizes Endodontics as the diagnosis and treatment of the pulp (root canal) and the surrounding tissues of both. When you look at your teeth in the mirror the crown is what you see. The rest of the tooth (the portion hidden beneath the gum line) is called the root. The outer portion of the root is a hard tissue called “dentin” and the inside channel contains a pulp of soft tissue, blood vessels, and multiple nerves.

Root Canal Treatment
Why are root canals needed?  Root Canals become necessary when a cavity is allowed to reach all the way to the pulp. Also, sometimes deep restorations and/or trauma may cause the nerve to become damaged. Root Canal treatments remove the pulp, which are the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth. This removal prevents or resolves the infection (abscess). Teeth tend to become infected because the pulp tissue inside the tooth becomes injured or diseased. This may lead to pain and swelling in the tissues surrounding the tooth.
